KIT has a number of test facilities for research dedicated to nuclear waste management and safety, some of them are unique in Europe. For safety research for nuclear waste management, an actinide laboratory and a nuclear controlled area as well as the INE actinide beam line of the ANKA synchrotron radiation source are available.
Facilities for reactor safety include water test rigs for studies of relevant phenomena in light water reactors, a hydrogen experimental center, large experimental facilities to investigate beyond-design basis accidents, the Karlsruhe Liquid-metal Laboratory (KALLA), and the high-temperature high-pressure helium loops HEBLO on a laboratory scale and the facility HELOKA on a pilot scale.
The radiation protection group has its own calibration hall for β-particles, photons, neutrons and radon.
